A valiant journalist was killed in broad daylight in Bhind, Madhya Pradesh (MP) on Monday. The journalist, Sandeep Sharma’s two-wheeler was struck by a truck from the behind and cause his death. He was investigating the sand mafia and was working on exposing the culprits, which apparently made him the target of the mafias.

Sandeep Sharma, 35 was working with a news channel and had been working on the sand mafia in MP. He had reported threat to his life after he publicized the sting video of a police officer involved in sand mining. Sharma accused the police officer of being deeply involved in the network of sand mafia, and this lead to the transfer of the accused officer.

Sharma’s two-wheeler was run over from behind by a truck killing the journalist on the spot. The driver abandoned the truck after driving away from the accident spot and is now absconding. It is tragic that Sharma was killed just near the Kotwali Police station which is a few meters away from the spot where he was.

The police have sealed the area of accident and investigation has been launched into the incident. On terms of anonymity, a police personnel said “CCTV footage shows the bike overtaking the dumper on the left and then turning to the right. Dumper driver would not have seen the bike till it swerved and came in front.” Prashant Khare, District SP assuringly told the local media that an exhaustive investigation will be done and the incident will be dealt from all perspectives to render justice.

The appalling incident has incited reactions from political parties. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister of MP addressing a press conference said that uncompromising action will be taken in dealing with the culprits of the killing. Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia insisted on Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the leading investigation agency to take charge of the case. He insinuated government’s lax approach on journalist’s safety and said “media is the fourth pillar of democracy and that is being crushed under the BJP’s rule.”

It is a very horrific time for journalists because on 25th March, two other journalists were killed in Bihar. Navin Nishchal and Vijay Singh who worked with Dainik Bhaskar were killed in similar circumstances as Sandeep Sharma, when their two-wheeler was hit by a car.
