10 persons who were accused in the infamous 2007 Hyderabad Mecca Masjid blast case have been acquitted today by a special NIA Court. 9 people were killed in the blast and 58 others were seriously wounded. Among the persons who were acquitted, the much debated Swami Aseemanand’s name is also there. In the beginning, this specific high profile case was first transferred to the CBI who then had filed a charge-sheet. Later on, in 2011, National Investigation Agency (NIA) took charge of the investigation.  Incidentally, all 10 persons were linked to right wing organizations. During the investigation, the NIA Officials examined 226 witnesses and 411 documents were exhibited as supporting documents.

Among those 10 accused, 5 of them were arrested whereas two accused namely Sandeep V Dange and Ramchandra Kalsangra are still absconding whereas another accused Sunil Joshi died earlier. NIA in a formal statement has said on the verdict, “We will examine the court judgment after we get a copy of the same and decide further course of action.” AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who has been a controversial political person in Hyderabad, remarked, “Justice has not been done. NIA and Modi govt didn’t even appeal against bail that was given to accused within 90 days. This was a completely biased investigation which will weaken our resolve to fight terrorism. 9 people died and many were injured.”

Interestingly, Congress leader Ashok Gehlot has been extra cautious with his remark, saying, “It is now up to the government to examine order and decide of a further appeal is required. As it is a judicial matter, I would not like to comment on it.” No doubt, the verdict will give the BJP leaders a huge sigh of relief, but on the other hand will enable fringe parties like AIMIM ample control over the local emotion. It remains to be whether BJP comes with a remark on the acquittal of Swami Aseemanand or not. Considering the present political situation with regard to Unnao and Kathua cases, this political news is definitely going to divert attention from the ongoing fiasco. In minority dominated areas, this news is certainly going to polarize votes which the political parties will definitely look to utilize and garner popular support in election mandate. No doubt, Congress has got a golden opportunity if they at all feel to get hold of BJP in wrong foot.  Anyhow, the families of the victims have no choice but to wait to find out who led such a blast attack near Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad more than a decade back.
