Ten people have been killed and fifteen others were injured as a man drove into pedestrians in Toronto. The person, named by police as Alek Minassian, 25, was arrested several streets away after a brief chase. Thankfully, the man was detained without any shots being fired. The incident appeared to be deliberate but whether it’s a terrorist act or not needs specific investigation. In view of this ‘horrific’ incident, Canadian public safety minister Ralph Goodale tweeted,”Grateful for the brave and professional response of Toronto Police and other first responders to the horrific attack at Yonge and Finch. Canadians are appalled at what happened. The victims and their families have our deepest condolences.” According to eyewitness accounts, the white rental van had repeatedly mounted the pavement and ran into people mercilessly.
The incident occurred at Yonge Street and Finch Avenue at 13:30 local time. Interestingly, around 18 miles away in the city center foreign ministers of the G7 were holding meeting. The residents are left in complete shock and the police have confirmed that it would be a complex investigation. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has tweeted,”Our thoughts are with all those affected by the terrible incident at Yonge and Finch in Toronto. Thank you to the first responders working at the scene – we’re monitoring the situation closely.”
There is no denying the fact that the US and Europe have seen an increase in driving attacks in recent years where terror links have been found in some cases. Only detailed investigation can further throw light on this present horrific incident in Toronto.
